ASHETEN

Asheten Mary’s was the first church that was started and built by St. Gebre Meskel Lalibela and finished by his nephew St. Nakuto Lab. After St. King Gebre Meskel Lalibela left his first work for his nephew, he created 11 rock-cut churches. While St. Nakuto Lab was the priest of the Asheten St. Mary church. He always smoked incense in the church, and the area around a church always smells good. In the time around the 11th century, Priest Nakuto Lab saw monks and priests come to visit the church, and he asked them “How did you come here?” The visitors said we smelled (In Amharic ASHETEN) the incense.

After that, they called the church Asheten St. Mary church and the perfume of St. Mary. Still, the area’s smell is good. We use the name Asheten for our first perfume brand to memorize the church of Lalibela and Asheten.
