St. George Lalibela church was built in the medieval period in Lalibela city, Ethiopia. Lalibela City was called Roha city before Geber Meskel Lalibela ruled the city. The city remained the capital city of Ethiopia (Wikipedia Lalibela, Emperor of Ethiopia). King Gebre Meskel Lalibela was king of the Zagwe Dynasty. While King Lalibela constructed 11 rock-cut (pink rock) churches from 1181 to 1221 AD, Bete Giyorgis, or St. George Lalibela was one of the churches. King Lalibela planned to construct St. George Lalibela and other churches after he visited Jerusalem. First, Lalibela built Bete Mariam, and then step by step built the rest of the ten churches. Ancient peoples believed that King Lalibela built the St. George Lalibela church by instruction of God, and his wish was to create New Jerusalem and to represent Heaven. Beyond this fairy tale history, the St. George Lalibela church is an amazing architectural achievement— UNESCO is considered as its the eighth wonder of the world, and it is one of the world heritage sites. Even though St. George Lalibela has a monolithic rock-cut structure, it has similarities with Axumawit architecture in some extent, and it has a Greek cross style of roof design. It is incredibly unique, merely architectural work, because it is built by a good design concept and idea, and it has perfect geometric shapes, structures, and many details. St George Lalibela church is not only rock-cut architecture it is also novelty architecture because king Geber Meskel Lalibela built St. George Lalibela with the shape of a cross.
